Bullpups win second straight championship

National University outlasted University of Santo Tomas in the second game of the UAAP Season 78 Girls’ Volleyball Tournament final, 25-23, 14-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-8, to win second straight championship.

NU took the opening set after trailing by as much as five points, 10-15. Best Attacker Faith Nisperos rallied past UST to finally close it, 25-23.

The Junior Tigresses were able to come back strong after losing the first frame, led by the team’s Skipper and tournament’s MVP Ejiya Laure who produced most of her points in the crucial parts of the match.

UST was down 18-24 in the fourth set, but Laure delivered three straight points to cut the deficit to three. Mangulabnan served up an ace before the former tied the game at 24. However, NU scored two straight, including the controversial winning point, to force a decider.

The Bullpups didn’t look back, and finally sealed the tournament, 15-8.

Game one was also taken by NU, who were the number one team in the league, 25-13, 25-14, 20-25, 25-14.

Ejiya Laure duplicates older sister’s achievement


For the third time in a row, Ejiya Laure bags another individual award in her UAAP Junior Volleyball stint to add to her trophy collections. And this time, she was able to get the most prestigious of them all—Most Valuable Player, duplicating Ennajie Laure‘s achievement in the 76th season of UAAP.

DLSZ’s Jules Samonte outscored everyone to be hailed as the Tournament’s Best Sorer. Faith Nisperos of NSNU, who was also last season’s MVP, wins as Best Spiker. Her teammates Sheena Toring and Thea Gagate grab the Best Blocker and Rookie of the Year award, respectively.

In the non-scoring departments, USTHS’s Libero Det Pepito was reigned as Best Receiver. While the Best Digger memento was given to Bela Peralta of DLSZ. Completing the individual awardees is NSNU’s Joyme Cagande who obtained the Best Setter accolade.

NU, UST set for Girls’ Volleyball final rematch


For the third consecutive year, National University and University of Santo Tomas face off for the UAAP Season 78 Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Defending champion NU outpowered University of the East in their semifinal encounter, 25-18, 25-16, 25-19. While UST escaped De La Salle-Zobel to earn last final berth, 25-22, 25-23, 28-26.

In Boys’ Division, UST eliminated Ateneo for last semifinal slot, 25-22, 25-19, 16-25, 25-22. The Tiger Cubs are set to face Far Eastern University-Diliman for the first pace of slep-ladder finals.
